Even though real ales of varying types have been around for centuries, this thing they call "Craft Beer" is still relatively new, appearing in the late 80s in local scenes, but not really taking off as a global force until 10 years ago, give or take.

I tend to view real ales and craft beers as pretty much the same thing now, both championing excellent brews. But for many people when being introduced to the concept of craft beer a few years ago, there's a good chance it was with a Rogue beer.
Rogue have been at the forefront of the Craft Beer scene since 1987 and were one of the brands that helped craft brewers spread globally, taking the big flavours of the west coast scene to the world. Specifically, Rogue are based in Oregon, the state it's difficult to drive around without stumbling across a famous craft brewer. Along with Rogue, Deschutes, Hop Valley and Ninkasi have made it to Malaysia from Oregon, and with dozens of other highly regarded independent brewers in the state there's a good chance they won't be the last to make the journey.
If you don't know where Oregon is, it's on the West coast of the States sandwiched between California to the South and Washington to the North. I could ramble on about all the great bands from the state, but this is supposed to be a beer blog. However, I am an 80s child, so next time you watch Goonies... that's Oregon; a town called Astoria. In fact, in a shot from Mikey's house looking down the hill to the river there is a dock (in the film it's called the Goon docks... hence The Goonies). Today, Rogue have a pub on that dock. *geeky fact fans rejoice*
For much of its existence Rogue's signature beer has been Dead Guy Ale, a beer with a tough reputation. Dead Guy is inspired by German Maibocks and other heavily malted traditional beers from Northern Europe. Typical of the style, it's lightly hopped, but heavy with malty aromas. It has a deep caramel colour and is rich and a little sweet, though not overly thick. It's quite balanced and moreish, similar to many old style malty ales from the UK.
Dead Guy Ale was among the first craft beers to land in Malaysia and is still going strong today. It can be found regularly in bottle and occasionally on tap in the usual places... Taps Bars, Ales and Lagers, Farmers Bar, Great Beer Bar etc...
It's a 6.8% German style, ale. Heavy with toffeeish, malty flavours. A hearty beer. If you like Dead Guy Ale you should also consider Fuller's 1845.
