Little Creatures Pale Ale

Australian craft beers have been enthusiastically welcomed to KL for quite a while and are amongst the more popular brews in many of the retailers. Little Creatures beers were one of the first to arrive right at the start of Malaysia's craft beer awakening and have lasted the pace as an almost permanent addition to the scene.

Hailing originally from Fremantle, Western Australia, but with a brewery in Geelong, Victoria, Little Creatures have set out with one aim in mind, to create the perfect pale ale. Despite a changing roster of styles and brands, the Pale Ale is still their passion.

Little Creatures pale ale was the beer with which they announced themselves back in 2000 when the style was less popular in Australia. Aiming to recreate a classic, hoppy, American style ale they helped kick-start a resurgence of the style, which had until then been closer to UK bitters, to the point that Australian Pale Ale is now a distinct variation.

When it arrived in KL it was only really found in the handful of dedicated craft beer bottle-shops that had sprung up around 2012, but it wasn't long before it could be found in bars, restaurants and hotels across the city, where it now often holds the dubious distinction of being the only non-commercial lager on offer, sold by people who don't know what craft beer is and generally twice the price it should be. Ah, the cost of fame...

Luckily it can still be found more reasonably priced in those same craft beer bottle-shops and bars where it first said hello. And luckily for us it's increasingly on sale in various supermarkets across the country too.

Little Creatures Pale Ale is golden in colour with a classic pale, foamy head. Not overly hoppy, it has a refreshing bitterness with a citrussy finish and slight toffee flavours. Brewed at 5.2% it's a great session beer for a long hot afternoon.

Outside of locally brewed beers, Little Creatures is probably the most omnipresent beer in KL and can be found in the strangest of places. So rather than pinpointing of where it can be found, I'd just suggest looking at the drinks menu next time you're out. It'll be there more often than not. I'd also recommend their IPA too. Both drinks remain reassuringly well valued.
